Our Approach at Growing Confident Minds

What is MSL?

MSL is a scientifically researched, evidence-based approach that uses multisensory components to effectively teach students with dyslexia how to read. It uses proven knowledge of how the brain works, while employing flexible, direct and explicit methods of instruction.

This includes the 6 essential components required for effective reading/literacy instruction:

  • Phonological Awareness

  • Oral Language

  • Phonics

  • Vocabulary

  • Comprehension

  • Fluency

The approach is characterised by the following essential elements:

  • Multisensory (incorporating visual, auditory & kinesthetic activities)

  • Explicit and direct (working one concept at a time)

  • Sequential (moving from simple to more complex)

  • Culminative (build upon prior knowledge)

  • Cognitive (learning is based on an understanding of language)

  • Flexible (programs are individualised and work at their own pace)

Social Education at Growing Confident Minds

At Growing Confident Minds, we believe that supporting students to create positive social connections with others creates happier and successful individuals. We foster an encouraging and accepting environment where students can engage in social skills using fun hands-on activities. In each education session, we embrace a Growth Mindset approach where children are encouraged to understand their valued role in their social connection journey. Developing social understanding creates resilient, persistent, and confident students for the classroom and beyond.

Students can attend social sessions in small groups with the support of a registered teacher. Building connections and understanding towards all neurotypes is an essential aspect of all our sessions.

The approach is characterised by the following essential elements:

  • Strength-Based Approach (focuses on strengths to build social skills)

  • Growth Mindset Approach (our brains grow and learn from different experiences)

  • Valuing Self-Worth (support students to advocate effectively)

  • Neuro-Affirming
    (Using neuro-affirming language and practice)
